A Wager can refer to a number of things. According to the dictionary, it is generally referred to an amount of currency or valued items that is involved in a gamble or bet that depends on a particular outcome of a situation. There are also such terms as a scientific wager and a legal wager. There is also a syndrome called WAGR syndrome.

In a scientific wager, a wager is placed based on a particular outcome that is then settled by way of a scientific method. The scenario may start with an uncertain statement, then an offer may be paid that will either prove or disprove the statement. When this happens, they are usually left open with no due date, however there are some instances where there are deadlines for the collection of the wager. These scientific wagers can usually have a massive controversial effect on the scientific community, as well as the wider society and general public.

Legal wagers were around in the Roman litigation system during the early Republic. When there was a particular procedure in force, a wager had to be put down by both parties before the legal process started at the preliminary hearing. Some say that this was discourage any frivolous litigation that may have taken place. If one party lost, then the other party would get the loosing parties wager by way of compensation instead of going to the court to cover any of the court fees. In this instance there are three different types of processes, in which each wager was handled differently.
